Finska Missionssällskapets verksamhetsledare Seppo Rissanen och direktören för utrikesarbetet Rolf Steffansson har skickat kondoleanser till Peshawar stift och offrens anhöriga i Pakistan med anledning av det dödliga bombattentatet i centralkyrkan den 22.9.
Söndagen den 22.9 avled över 70 personer i ett bombattentat i Pakistans förenade protestantiska kyrka i Peshawar. Attentatet inträffade i All Saints church i gamla stan i Peshawar efter söndagens gudstjänst. Två självmordsbombare detonerade bomber mitt bland gudstjänstdeltagarna.
Peshawar stift meddelade på söndagen att över 60 människor har dött och att det bland dem fanns bland annat söndagsskoldeltagare och medlemmar i kyrkokören.
Biskopen i Peshawar stift, Humphrey S. Peters, har fördömt attacken och förmedlat sina kondoleanser till dem som har mist sina anhöriga. Enligt biskop Peters är attacken en följd av att regeringen inte har klarat av att garantera minoriteternas trygghet i nordvästra Pakistan. Bomattentatet är troligtvis den värsta attacken som riktats mot kristna någonsin i Pakistan. Omkring 2-4 procent av Pakistans 180 miljoner invånare är kristna.
Finska Missionssällskapet har verkat i Pakistan sedan 1960. Sällskapet samarbetar med Peshawar stift inom Pakistans kyrka. Arbetet i Pakistan fokuserar på hälsovård och skolgång. Sällskapet har just nu en anställd i Pakistan som verkar vid sjukhuset i Tank, ungefär 200 kilometer söder om Peshawar.

It is with utmost shock that we have received the news about the acts of terrorism at the All Saints Cathedral in Peshawar. We have very inspiring memories of visiting the cathedral and the Christians worshipping there, understanding the impact of the gospel of Christ in the Pakistani society. Hearing that these very people have been the target of acts of such blind hatred makes us astounded.
You are all in our prayers during these days of suffering! We pray for justice for the Christians struggling for their place in society. We pray for comfort for all those who mourn their loved ones. And we pray for strength to survive these days of evil. We also remembered you, bishop, and your family in the work of leading your people during these times.
We ask you to send our greetings to the families and close ones to the victims. Please tell them, that they are not forgotten. They are carried by the prayers of thousands of Christians in Finland. In your contacts with the government, please also express our astonishment over this amount of violence. The world will be following the actions taken by the leaders of Pakistan.
